Colleagues

Colleagues' reactions are often an area of great concern for people returning to work after mental illness.

Many people describe experiences of stigma and discrimination while others report that support from colleagues played a role in recovery. If you work with someone returning to work after mental illness you can play a valuable role in helping them to do this successfully.

Don’t avoid talking to the person for fear of saying the wrong thing! While you should be respectful of a colleagues mental health history and not pry for details about their problems, welcoming the person back after sick leave with a simple “It’s good to see you back” can be a good start.
